The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass between MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Purple Mountain, and it is about 11km from north to south. The Gap is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. Within the gap are five lakes: Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough. Between the first two lakes is the ‘Wishing Bridge.’ It is believed that wishes made while on the bridge are destined to come true. There are multiple ways to venture through the Gap. The best way to see and truly experience the Gap of Dunloe is to walk beginning alongside Kate Kearneys Cottage, although it will take nearly an entire afternoon to complete. Alternatively, you can hire either a pony or a horse-drawn trap to explore the Gap of Dunloe. It is recommended that you organise someone to pick you up on the other side when you finish the pass since Killarney town is a further 12km.
